Recovery typically takes 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the extent of the procedures. Most patients return to light work within 2 weeks and resume full activities within 6 to 8 weeks.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Scars

• Location: Low horizontal scar across the lower abdomen, typically hidden beneath underwear or bikini line.
• Length: Varies depending on the amount of excess skin; can range from hip to hip.
• Additional Scar: Around the belly button if repositioning is needed.
  

Breast Procedures

»Breast Augmentation: Small incision under the breast fold (inframammary), around the areola, or in the armpit(rarely preferred).
»Breast Lift (Mastopexy): More extensive scars depending on severity of sagging:

1. Crescent or periareolar scar: Around the nipple only.
2. Lollipop scar: Around the nipple + vertically down to the breast fold.

Birth control pills, especially those containing estrogen, increase the risk of blood clots (DVT or PE). Surgery itself also increases clot risk due to inflammation and reduced mobility. Combining both factors raises the risk further.

Because of this, many surgeons recommend stopping birth control pills 2 to 4 weeks before surgery and resuming them about 2 weeks after surgery, once mobility improves.
During this time, patients should use non-hormonal contraception, such as condoms.

If the procedure is minor (for example, breast surgery without tummy tuck), some surgeons may allow continued use of birth control depending on the patient’s individual risk.

»Be sure to tell your surgeon if you are using any form of birth control, including pills, patch, ring, injection, implant, or IUD. Also disclose if you are taking hormone therapy, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, or any over-the-counter or herbal supplements.

»Smoking or vaping should be completely stopped at least 2 to 4 weeks before and after surgery to promote proper healing and reduce the risk of poor scarring or complications.
»Alcohol should be avoided for 48 to 72 hours before surgery because it can increase bleeding and interfere with anesthesia or medications.
»Caffeine intake should be limited, as it may affect blood pressure and lead to dehydration, both of which can complicate surgery and recovery.

»Any form of birth control (pill, patch, vaginal ring, injection, implant, or IUD)

»Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

»Prescription medications, including for blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid, or mental health (e.g., antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication)

»Over-the-counter medications (including pain relievers, allergy meds, etc.)

»Herbal or natural supplements (especially ginseng, garlic, ginkgo, turmeric, St. John’s Wort, etc.)

»Blood thinners (including aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, warfarin, or clopidogrel)

»Vitamins (notably Vitamin E, which can increase bleeding risk)

Any recent use of weight-loss pills, fat burners, or detox products.
